w3d2 – deadlift and rep PR (moar PRs)

a couple of years ago, just before the 2006 olympic winter games, austrian cross country skiiers decided to try out the fancy practice of blood doping. the guardian and bbc, among others, wrote about it at the time. the story I heard, straight from the anti-doping source was something like this:

it had been suspected for some time that a number of cross country skiiers from switzerland was using something illegal. it just wasn’t clear to what extent they were doing this. in comes WADA and it’s time to give up some body fluids. however, the athletes have mysteriously vanished from the pension where they were supposed to live during their training camp. no tests. however, the WADA agents enter the pension, ignoring the landlords repeated whining. in the basement, there is a haematological laboratory easily on par with the ones at a university hospital. also, a known doping offender was identified at the pension.

since the pension was located in italy, a country where doping is a criminal offense, WADA cooperated with the carabineri to pursue the athletes. when it was discovered that the austrian athletes chose to stay at hotels outside the olympic village, it was decided that a razzia/raid should take place. WADA and carabinieri would strike together.

when the athletes realised they were actually being raided by armed cops, panic broke out and hilarity ensued. stuff thrown from the windows included blood packs, dialysis machines and serious amounts of drugs. according to a person who was present, it looked like something from a cartoon.

people were later convicted in court and banned for life from the olympics.

main lift

deadlift, 5 / 3 / 1+. after warmup:

  1. 5x 141 kg
  2. 3x 158.5 kg
  3. 4x 178.5 kg (a rep PR at this weight)
  4. 3x 178.5 kg (joker)
  5. 1x 185 kg (joker)

pretty pleased with a solid four at 178.5 kg. the chalk is working wonders for me. I though I had more gas left in the tank than I actually did, apparently, which I realised at 185 kg. nonetheless, a decent training session.

assistance lifts

squats (supersets with band pullaparts, in total 300).

  1. 10x 118.5 kg
  2. 10x 118.5 kg
  3. 10x 118.5 kg
  4. 10x 118.5 kg
  5. 10x 118.5 kg

I made a good effort but the last set was grueling.

    Awesome job on the DL. 118.5kgx10 would be a grinder. Nice. Don’t know how this post slipped by me.

    See, if they just let everybody take guce they wouldn’t have to waste taxpayers’ money on staging elaborate cross-border raids to nab a bunch of poor skiers like they’re the Mafia and Al Qaeda combined. Doping for everyone 🙂

      I’m ambivalent towards doping. On one hand, it’s clearly cheating and I hate cheating (when other people use ut against me). On the other hand, who gives a f* ck?

      My main concern here is the widespread use among recreational gym rats and the health implications among these individuals.
